Ever since your show at the Crystal Ballroom (I'm seeing Arctic Monkeys there in August too!) my mom and I have loved Chopper and he's kind of become legendary in my family. I'm always on the look-out for him in videos of you guys (like at the beggining of the T-Mobile Live Rising band bio interview or on that video you posted of him on Twitter...he is a national treasure btw). Does he have multiple "Chopper/Roadie to Go" shirts or does he wear the same one everyday? We are just really curious about him. Any good Chopper stories for us Maust?
i’m glad that you like chopper so much. he’s a valuable valuable valuable part of our touring entourage. he really looks after our gear like its nobodies biz. he’s one of the sweetest peeps i know. i told him about your curiosity about him, and he offered to give you an old “roadie to go” shirt. above is a picture of him holding it in a bar in belfast, ireland. if i were you, i’d frame it. send your address to me and it’ll be in the US postal system before you know it. you inspired me to ask nathan to write a little piece on chopper. i’ll post it momentarily.
hi maust. we met each other with my friend Charlotte at the end of the gig in marseille. that was a real pleasure to meet you. after that we discovered your art and truly loved it. that’s great. you use all kinds of arts, you’re a complete artist. i like the way you share your art. that's generous how you love sharing with people all over the world, i like this idea! i'm a student in architecture, and I try to practice all sorts of art too. listening to cold war kids’ music is really inspiring for me!
with Charlotte we would like to receive one of your postcards! me, i would love one with the phrase “get to know yourself on the other side of tired” you wrote in a room... that’s very cool.
love all your artworks. hope to meet you again soon! come take a ride in marseille as soon as you can when you’re in france, and stay a little bit more. you will enjoy the city!
keep making such beautiful things Mister Mauster, for our big pleasure!
hi back. thanks for the nice note. i can send you and charlotte some postcards, not a problem. just send me your address. being an architecture student, what’s your favorite building you’ve seen? this isn’t my favorite building, but its pretty impressive and i just saw it not too long ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Biblioteca-nacional-de-argentina.jpg
I think you're wonderful. I've never known any artist that really shares themselves through a medium like tumblr, etc. It's cool, really real (and you're so nice!). I'll be road trippin the US in a few days and coldwarkids is for sure going to be blasting from LA to North Carolina. Thank you for what is going to be a great ride.
have a great trip on your road trip. in australia, they have these signs on the road that say “droopy eyes?, power nap, now!” not kidding. gabe and I always think thats so funny. thats my advice to you on your trip. i’ll be road trippin soon too. well, actually plane trippin up to sasquatch. excited about it. speaking of road trips, heres 6 of my go-to albums for road trips. whats everybody else’s favorite road trip records? have fun, and go places you normally wouldn’t go!
Maust, all the photos in Loyalty to Loyalty cd art are yours?
They look so beautiful in black and white, and the images correspond perfectly to the songs they accompany each page.
By the way, who wrote Cryptomnesia? Its such a meaningful song and word for me.
i’m glad you like them so much. i enjoy those photos a lot too, but they are not mine. they are my friend matt wignalls. you can see his work here, http://www.mattwignall.com/
i have a few pieces of his on my wall. on his homepage, to the right, you’ll see a girl smoking a cigarette. i have that one hanging on my wall. i love it.
hi Matt, it's Chloé, we met us yesterday at ur gig in Montpellier, sorry to repeat this but, it was really nice to meet ya, I thought it was too bad that we didn't have the time to talk about art, because i've seen ur others postcards, I like your work! I hope one day you will expose your postcards or pictures !
nice meeting you too! had a great time in your town. if “exposing” my postcards means sending you one, i can do that. just send me your address! i have to get some dinner now
glad to hear you say that about David Lynch. I like his films and his art as well but it's his approach to making art - specifically the way he talks about it that I value most. He talks a lot about ideas - that they're the best things going - something like that. Don't know if you've read it but Lynch on Lynch by Chris Rodley is a great book - just his take on things. He's really not all that articulate actually - i think it's just what he leaves out when talking about making art - the mystery of it, something like that. Anyway. Big fan of your work.
ya. i’ll get that book. our drummer aveiro has it and likes it a lot. thanks for your thoughts. let me send you a postcard. got a snail mail addy?
ooh, I forgot:
Can you tell me more about ”get to know yourself on the other side of tired.”? I love it, is it from a book or movie?
hi, i’m glad you’re interested in that phrase. its not from a book or a movie. i wrote it one night when i was getting to know myself on the other side of being tired. it has to do with artists and their relationships to their creations, and the process they go through. i don’t really believe that the best creations come from being on the other side of tired, but i do think that good things can be, or are conceived in that place. everyone is good at coming up with ideas, but we rarely carry them out to make them creations that all people can enjoy, and hang on the wall, or put down to tape. nathan and i were talking about this a few hours ago at the red lion. it’s when push comes to shove in the artist realm. what do you think? above is a photo of the david lynch documentary. i think its one of the most inspiring things i know about. i like his artwork somewhat, but i love the way he talks about his artwork. i find this documentary well worth watching.
First of all: I was waiting for you after the show last February when you guys were playing in Amsterdam. I told you via Tumblr that I would love get the world ''joy and misery'' tattooed in your handwriting.. you were MIA. :(
Anyways, could you tell me more about ”get to know yourself on the other side of tired.”? I love it, is it from a book or movie?
sounds great. i’m sorry i missed you when we were over. i’d be glad to write it out for you and send it to you. can you send me your address so i might pop a postcard in the mail with those words on it?
your handwriting is so raw, i love it. would you please write out the word 'holy!' i want that tattoo'd.
sure, that sounds all right. i can write that down for you. send me your snail mail and i’ll send you a few versions. on that note, i think you might enjoy this. my mom wrote me an email a few days ago addressing my handwriting. heres lucy maust quoted, (i hope she doesn’t mind me telling you this, but i enjoyed it).
"It occurred to me the other day, that if I’d realized you were holding the pencil "wrong" when you learned to write and corrected it, your graphic design career might never have happened as your unique handwriting is a big part of it. Your early teachers always said, don’t worry about it—he’ll always use a computer anyway.” - lucy maust, (my mom)
for those of you that didn’t get nathan’s essay on tattoos sent to you directly in the mail, here it is in its rawness. i apologize for it being so xeroxey, but i think it looks better that way, and frankly i don’t want to take the time to re-type it, so here it is in his own hand-writing. now, i gotta go get some wine and cheese because i’m in lyon and thats what they told me i do here.
Bummed I wasn't soon enough for Nathan's essay or your zine! This is one of those times where I wish I was not in high school all day. Anyways, thanks for posting pics of your zine (it's beautiful)! Is there any way you could post Nate's essay, so we could at least read it via blog? I'm curious.
Hey! I tweeted the picture of my Royal Blue tattoo :). Didn't get a reply yet, so I didn't know if you dudes came across it! But I know you wanted to see, so here! Hope you like it :). Thank you for making beautiful music that has changed my life.
